Four months after the release of Windows 8, Apple has finally updated Boot Camp Assistant to add support for Windows 8. Yes, Boot Camp 5.0.5033 includes drivers for Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.

Mac users who would like to install and enjoy Windows 8 on Mac machines without going through driver issues can now download the newest version of Boot Camp drivers from Apple’s download page. The new Boot Camp should address issues with the trackpad on some MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

If you have no idea about Boot Camp, it’s an assistant software available on OS X Lion and Mountain Lion to help users easily partition the hard drive, prepare bootable Windows media, and then install Windows alongside your existing Mac.

According to the official Boot Camp support page, Boot Camp 5 adds support for Windows 8 (64-bit) and the new drivers support both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Windows 8 (64-bit). Unfortunately, Boot Camp 5 doesn’t support 32-bit Windows 7 and Windows 8.

So, Mac users have no option but to install 64-bit Windows using Boot Camp. However, the previous version (v4.0) of Boot Camp supports 32-bit Windows 7.

The support page also notes that Boot Camp supports upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, provided that you install Boot Camp 5.0 drivers on your Windows 7 machine before upgrading to Windows 8. If your Mac comes with Fusion Drive, it turns out that Boot Camp Assistant will help you install Windows on hard disk drive, not the Flash drive even if you have sufficient free space. Also note that Boot Camp doesn’t support installing Windows on external hard drive.

How To Import Photos From iPhone To Windows 8

Method 1:

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your PC using the connection cable provided by Apple.

Step 2: The moment Windows recognizes your iPhone, you will see a toast notification on the upper right of the screen asking Tap to choose what happens with this device. 

And if this notification isn’t appearing on your screen, it’s because you have either disabled the toast notification feature or turned on hide notification for 1, 4, or 8 hours option. In this case, you can follow the instructions provided in Method 2 to import your iPhone photos.

Step 3: Click or tap the notification to see three options: Import photos and videos, Open device to view files, and Take no action.

Click or tap Import photos and videos option. This action will open all photos on your iPhone in Windows 8’s Photos app.

Step 4: Select photos and videos that you wish to import and then click or tap Import button to start copying all photos from your iPhone to PC.

Step 5: Once Photos app completes its business, you’ll see an option to open up the folder to view imported photos. You can also close Photos app if you would like to view photos later.

All imported photos are located in Pictures library. To open Pictures library, open up Computer (File Explorer) or any other folder, and then click Pictures option located in the left pane. Good luck!

Method 2: Use this method if you have already connected your iPhone to Windows 8 PC.

Step 1: Switch to the Start screen, click or tap Photos app tile to run the app.

Step 2: Right-click anywhere on the Photos app to see Import option in the lower right corner of the screen.

Step 3: Click or tap Import button to view list of all connected devices to your PC.

Step 4: Click or tap your iPhone entry, select photos and videos that you would like to import, and then click or tap Import button to start transferring selected photos and videos to your PC. 

Photos app saves all imported photos in Pictures library. You can view all imported photos either using Photos app, Windows Photo Viewer, or any other program.

Installing The Windows 8 Consumer Preview Step By Step

Downloading the 2.5GB ISO image from Microsoft's website took me about 20 minutes, although that time can extend based on your Internet connection. The installation process itself—which I completed in a VMware Fusion virtual machine with about 1.5GB of RAM and one virtual CPU—was quite simple and took about 10 to 15 minutes.

First up, a betta fish (because it's a beta, after all)

Now we move into the installation process:

You'll have to enter a product key, of course. What would Windows be without the Windows activation process?

But instead of paying $200 for a license, all you have to do is grab the product key from the download page, as seen here:

Next, you'll agree to the Windows license terms, and select whether to do an upgrade or custom installation. The latter lets you choose which hard drive to use:

If you've installed Windows before, this screen will be quite familiar. This is the longest part of the installation, but it only took five minutes or so.

After installation, you'll see another betta fish, and then you can start personalizing your computer, starting with giving it a name and choosing a background color.

Now it's time to select installation settings.

If you select "custom," you'll go through options for sharing and connecting to devices; whether to automatically download updates and new device drivers; whether to send diagnostic information to Microsoft; whether to share information such as your name with applications; and whether to turn on the Windows Location Platform for location-based app settings. Here's an image of the settings for keeping your computer up to date and safe from viruses:

Now you can sign into the OS so that you can download applications from the new Windows Store and sync data across different computers.

You'll be asked to enter a mobile phone number, alternate e-mail address, and security question, so Microsoft can help you reset your password if you can't log in. After signing in, you'll finally be looking at Microsoft's brand-new Metro interface for Windows 8:

How to use VMware tools to Install Windows 8 on VMware software?

This article will help you install windows 8 on VMware software using VMware tools. The whole installation process takes only about 10 minutes depending on your computer and resources available for virtual machine. The Windows 8 installation process is straight forward and you can choose default options or select obvious settings. It will ask for a Windows 8 product key which you can skip and choose to provide it later. 

The Windows 8 Developer Preview is a preview of what an operating system is expected to look and feel like once development is complete. While you may be months or even a year away from seeing the release version of Windows 8, you can still take advantage of this program for a quick glimpse of what is ahead.

For users who switched away and for those also who stayed away through Windows Vista and Windows 7, Windows 8 marks one of the most significant user interface changes. Like Windows 3.11 gave way to Windows 95. The Start menu is entirely different, and the user interface is geared towards a blend between traditional and touch-based applications. 

Step by step 10 instructions on how to install Windows 8 on VMware Software:

1)     Download Windows 8 installer from the official Microsoft Windows website.

2)     Install VMware software. The installation is a straight forward process. During installation, you will have to provide the VMware product key you received in the email.

3)     Launch VMware software. You can find the shortcut to launch VMware software on your Desktop or Start Menu 

4)     Create a new Virtual Machine by clicking on the appropriate link in the welcome screen or in the File menu.

5)     When you create a new virtual machine, choose the option "I will install the operating system later."

The option to install from the Windows 8 installer ISO image may not work since VMware cannot recognize the Windows 8 operating system yet.

6)     Choose Windows as the operating system. Since you will not find Windows 8 in the list, choose Windows 7 or Windows 7 64-bit, whichever is appropriate. Choose the default options or appropriate options in all other screens.

7)     After you complete creating the new virtual machine, VMware will open the new virtual machine with a blank screen.

8)     Click on the "Power on this virtual machine" option. It will try to boot the virtual machine. However it will fail to start the operating system since there is no operating system installed yet. 

 

9)     Mount the ISO image as DVD drive and install Windows 8 from it. To mount the Windows 8 ISO image, click on the tab for your virtual machine in VMware window and select"Removable Devices" à "CD/DVD (IDE)" à "Settings".


 

10)  Click on the “CD/DVD (IDE)” option on the left side. On the right side, choose the option "Use ISO image file" and select your Windows 8 installer ISO image file.

 

You are all set to install Windows 8 on the VMware software. All you have to do is click on "Restart VM" at the bottom of the VMware software screen and it will restart the virtual machine and boot from the Windows 8 ISO image.

Windows 8 : Metro interface

The Metro interface doesn't look that different, but having your email, photos, appointments and friends pinned to it livens it up considerably - as does the new Metro tile for the desktop, which sports a cute Metro-ified version of the Windows 7 beta fish.

You can also pin libraries here as well as Explorer, but you have to do that from Explorer set to view the desktop rather than from within a library itself.

The improved touch gestures also make it far easier to work with. Swipe from the right edge of the screen and you get the redesigned charm bar; Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings.

You can do the same thing by leaving your mouse pointer in the top or bottom right corner; first the charms appear as white outlines, then if you don't move your mouse they disappear. Windows assumes you didn't want to trigger them, since you might be moving the mouse to scroll or closing a window at the side of the screen instead. If you are, you don't have to wait for the charms to vanish to do so. Move the mouse towards the charms and the black bar and charm titles draw in on screen.

Start, which is highlighted in the accent colour of the colour theme you choose, swaps between the Start screen and whatever you were doing last. Search is now context sensitive; if you're in IE when you choose it, you get results from Bing first.

Swipe up from the bottom on the Start screen to get a quick link to the All Apps view, which is now neatly organised into program groups, arranged alphabetically.

As you swipe across the Start menu, it stops with the group of tiles you've swiped to line up under the word Start; this bouncing into place is the promised 'speed bump' to help you navigate around. Scrolling with a mouse works far better - if you push the mouse past the edge of the screen, the tiles scroll as if you were swiping with your finger.

This works so well you'll miss it in apps that don't support it, such as Photos, where you have to go back to grabbing the scrollbar or use a touch pad or Microsoft Touch Mouse, which enables you to swipe sideways.

The Semantic zoom feature now works too; pinch to shrink the tiles on the Start screen to tiny thumbnails so you can see everything at once or move an entire group. Select a group and drag it down to get the option of naming it.

This is also the view you get when you drag a tile you're moving to the bottom of the screen, which makes it easier to move an item a long way across the screen without disturbing the arrangement of all your tiles and groups.

As you drag a tile between two groups, when you position it between them a vertical grey bar appears to show that you're creating a new group to put it in.

Switching between apps is now far easier. You can still drag in the next app in the stack from the left edge of the screen to be full screen or to snap into a side window, but when the icon of that next app appears, you can also drag it back to the edge to get a vertical pane of thumbnails.

This only shows six thumbnails of recent apps (including the desktop if that's open) plus the thumbnail for the Start menu. Tap a thumbnail to open the app or drag it to choose where on screen it appears.

You can get the switching pane using a mouse by leaving the mouse pointer in the top or bottom left corner of the screen until a thumbnail appears (the next app at the top, the Start menu preview at the bottom). Drag down with the mouse and the thumbnails appear. If you want to see all current desktop apps and recent Metro apps, use Alt+Tab instead. Win+Tab makes the switching pane appear.

You can close Metro apps without restoring to the task manager. Drag down from the top of the screen until the app you're looking at shrinks down to a thumbnail and keep dragging that off the screen to close it (it's a longer swipe than when you use a quick finger swipe down from the top or up from the bottom of the screen to get the menu bar inside an app).

That works with a mouse as well. Or you can use Alt+F4, just like with a desktop app.

You can type quite well on screen. The large touch keyboard is a little better laid out now, and has predictive text and spelling corrections.

The thumb keyboard layout still has the alphabet split between the two sides of the screen where it's all in reach of your thumbs, but there's now a numeric keyboard in the middle to make it faster to type passwords (or indeed, numbers) and you can resize the keyboard.

The new notifications in Metro work well; they pop up in the top right corner of the screen where they're not likely to be in the way and you can tap for options. So the first time you put a USB stick in, you can choose whether to open Explorer or do something else, and that will happen automatically next time you insert it.
